In Short
- Yes, you can do CMA with B.Com, either alongside your degree or after it. It's one of the most common combinations among CMA students.
- While studying B.Com: you've already passed Class 12, so you can start with CMA Foundation in your first year and move to Intermediate after clearing it.
- After B.Com: graduates can skip Foundation and register directly for CMA Intermediate. There's no minimum percentage.
- The subjects overlap heavily — accounting, costing, tax, law and economics — so each one makes the other easier.
- The real challenge is time, not difficulty: you'll need to plan around university exams and attendance.
- ICMAI fees: ₹6,000 for Foundation registration and ₹23,100 for Intermediate, plus exam fees each term.
If you're doing — or about to start — a B.Com, adding CMA is one of the smartest moves you can make. You study many of the same subjects anyway, and by the time your classmates graduate with a general degree, you can be well on your way to a professional qualification.
This guide explains exactly how CMA fits with B.Com, which route to take depending on which year you're in, how to manage both, and what it costs.
Two Ways to Do CMA with B.Com
| Route 1: During B.Com | Route 2: After B.Com | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | 1st and 2nd-year B.Com students | B.Com graduates |
| Where you start | CMA Foundation | CMA Intermediate (direct entry) |
| Levels to clear | Foundation → Intermediate → Final | Intermediate → Final |
| Big advantage | Most of CMA is done by the time you graduate | Skips a whole level; full focus on CMA |
| Main challenge | Balancing college exams and CMA exams | Starting later than students who began in college |
Route 1: Start CMA in Your First Year of B.Com
CMA Foundation is open to anyone who has passed Class 12, so you can register in your first year of college. Foundation has four papers — business laws and communication, financial and cost accounting, business mathematics and statistics, and business economics and management — much of which overlaps with your first-year B.Com subjects.
After clearing Foundation, you register for Intermediate and can take its two groups over the rest of your degree. Many students who start early finish Intermediate around the time they graduate, leaving only Final and practical training.
Route 2: Direct Entry After Graduation
Once you have your B.Com degree, ICMAI lets you skip Foundation and register directly for CMA Intermediate. There's no minimum percentage requirement. Final-year students should check ICMAI's current rules on provisional registration before deciding whether to start with Foundation or wait for their degree. For the full details, read our guide to CMA Intermediate direct entry for graduates.
Which Route Should You Take?
| You are in… | Our suggestion |
|---|---|
| B.Com 1st year | Start CMA Foundation now. You'll have time to clear Foundation and most of Intermediate before you graduate. |
| B.Com 2nd year | Foundation still makes sense if you start soon. If graduation is under 18 months away, compare the timeline with waiting for direct entry. |
| B.Com final year | Check ICMAI's rules on provisional registration for Intermediate. If you can't register yet, use the time to start preparing for Intermediate so you're ahead when you do. |
| B.Com graduate | Register directly for CMA Intermediate. Group 1 first is the usual approach. |
How B.Com and CMA Subjects Overlap
This overlap is why B.Com students often find CMA easier to start than students from other streams:
| B.Com subject | Related CMA paper(s) |
|---|---|
| Financial Accounting, Corporate Accounting | Financial Accounting; Corporate Accounting and Auditing (Intermediate) |
| Cost Accounting, Management Accounting | Cost Accounting; Management Accounting (Intermediate) |
| Income Tax, GST | Direct and Indirect Taxation (Intermediate) |
| Business Law, Company Law | Business Laws and Ethics (Intermediate) |
| Financial Management | Financial Management and Business Data Analytics (Intermediate) |
| Economics, Business Statistics | Business Economics; Business Mathematics and Statistics (Foundation) |
The overlap helps, but CMA goes deeper and is more practical than most B.Com courses. Don't assume that passing a B.Com paper means you're ready for the CMA paper.
How to Manage B.Com and CMA Together
- Check for exam clashes early. CMA exams are in June and December, and many universities hold semester exams around November–December and April–May. Before filling each CMA exam form, check your university date sheet and choose terms that don't collide.
- Keep college attendance safe. Most colleges have minimum attendance rules. Choose a CMA batch that fits around your college hours.
- Study one CMA group at a time. With college on the side, one group per term is far more manageable than two.
- Use the overlap. When a topic appears in both, study it once at the CMA level. That usually covers what your B.Com exam needs.
- Plan your study hours. Two to three hours on college days and longer sessions on holidays is a realistic pace for one group.

Is B.Com + CMA Worth It?
For most commerce students, yes. A B.Com alone is a general degree shared by lakhs of graduates every year. B.Com with CMA gives you a professional qualification in costing, management accounting, finance and tax — skills companies hire for. CMA's cost is also far lower than an MBA or most professional courses. The Bottom Line
B.Com and CMA fit together naturally. If you're early in your degree, start with CMA Foundation now. If you've graduated, go straight to CMA Intermediate. Either way, plan around your college exams, take one group at a time, and register before the cut-off for the term you want.
